Day 2 of our vacation was spent mostly traveling from Berlin to the island of Hiddensee. We took the the underground trains to get to the above ground train.
It was a three hour train ride from Berlin to the city of Straslund. The kids watched movies, ate snacks, and enjoyed looking out the windows.
We walked about 2 miles from the train station to the Ferry. The town was really cute and it was a really nice walk after being on the train for so long.
We had just enough time to walk to the ferry and have a bite to eat before we got on the 2 1/2 hour ferry ride to the island.
The Ferry was actually the easiest and most fun for the kids because there was lots of space to move around.
They liked walking out to the deck and watching the water and the sail boats, that got really close to us, I thought.
There are no cars on the island so people bring their bikes over on the Ferry. We planned on renting them there.
Then we were finally there!!!! This was the boat that brought us there safely.
We put Owen in charge of our luggage while we figured out where we were suppose to go.
They had these cute luggage carts that you could either push/pull or attach to your bikes. Our house was close enough to the Ferry Port that we didn't need to use one.
Our apartment was inside this large house. I think there were 7 total apartments inside.
We unloaded our luggage and then put on swim suits and headed through the town to the beach.
This was the smoothest the water ever was. Too bad we didn't realize it was going to be that case until later in the week.
Brian said it wasn't too cold.
The island is 17 kilometers long and sandy beach along one side of it. Beautiful.
The kids were in Heaven.
And here is our apartment. It was small but functional and I was really impressed with the way the utilized the space. This was the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedroom. all in one!
Brian and I slept out in the fold out of the wall bed so we could stay up a little later than the kids. The bed was fairly comfortable, but we were happy to be back to our own after 7 days!
The kids were super tired after the first day and after baths and dinner, Ellie actually told us she wanted to go to her bed. She walked right in, layed down and we didn't hear from her until morning. This has never happened before!!! We might have worn them out a bit.
